CIVIL WAR HISTORY

Chattanooga's strategic location, along with vast river and rail systems made it one of the most sought after cities during the Civil War and some of the hardest fought and most complex battles took place here is the Fall of 1863 between the areas of Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge.  Chattanooga was considered the gateway to the Deep South, thus an important location for both the Union and the Confederate armies.
